General information
This module will introduce you to helminth infections of livestock of veterinary and zoonotic importance and to basic and advanced diagnostic methods in veterinary helminthology. These methods include qualitative and quantitative coprological methods with an introduction to the identification of helminths, abattoir-based methods, laboratory animal models, methods for detection of anthelmintic resistance and interpretation of diagnostic methods leading to decision making.
Learning objectives
• Understand the particular conditions for the transmission of helminth infections of livestock in a tropical environment
• Understand the basis for economical and sustainable control of helminth infections in the tropics
• Understand the development of anthelmintic resistance (AR) of helminths, the methods to detect AR and understand the methods how to reduce AR development
• Understand the particular conditions for the transmission of common parasitic zoonoses
• Appraise the role and the methods of veterinary inspection in the prevention and control of helminth zoonoses
• Understand the methodology and importance of laboratory animals in helminth diseases research
• Operate current parasitological techniques and interpret parasitological parameters
• Give a short presentation on a selected veterinary helminthology topic
